A New era of education

“Beyond the Bricks” is a documentary created with the goal of promoting solutions for one of America’s critical problems in education: the consistently low performance of African-American boys in the public school system. Interviewed are scholars, community organizers, politicians, as well as students, who struggle to either get themselves back on track and/or to stay on track to success.

Though the film focuses primarily on schools and students from Newark, NJ, the issues addressed there extend to urban enclaves throughout the nation.

This project focuses on three specific areas of interest in gathering the best ideas and practices:

  1. PUBLIC POLICY – How do socioeconomic factors affect the educational prospects of students? How can we adopt policies that better attend to the needs of poor, marginalized children?
  2. PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM – What measures are effective in both engaging and challenging students in the classroom? How can we make sure all children are prepared to compete in a globalized economy?
  3. TEENS AND THEIR COMMUNITY – What are the responsibilities of the child, parents and their community in ensuring that the child has the best chance for a successful future?

“Beyond the Bricks” promotes hope and the idea that with people at every level working diligently on this issue, there can be real solutions to the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that have plagued African-American boys and their education.
